And it was cute but I found that guest bumped into it a lot and it took up too much room. It wasn't as sturdy as I would have liked so I boxed it up after that first wedding and eventually sold it on marketplace.  The next several weddings I took my easel from home; a nice sturdy H frame. I like that this style folded easily and had a shelf on the bottom so that I can rest my feet.

I tried to make that floppy hat a thing for about one summer and then gave up on it. The H frame easel was great and it is still my easel I use in the studio but the constant moving and folding took a toll on the wood and now it's hard to get the bolts to tighten enough for everything to stay in place. I added more washers but it really wasn't meant for the constant travel. I've also noticed that I have really added to my paintbrush collection. Additional must have for me was the IPad holder, that folding table and the Staywet pallet.

About a year ago I feel in love with a single staff easel I found through facebook advertising.

I did a lot of research and back and forth because it was a little on the pricey side but I really thought it beautiful! And it is! But like the other easels it has some draw backs.... it's huge! and awkward to load. I have to drive my expedition in order to transport it to venues and still lay a seat down. The main staff has to rise for you to raise the height of the canvas which can make the overall height of the easel crazy tall. That's a weird design fail that should have been an easy fix. But it looks great and they did put some decent casters on it so once it's out of the car its fairly easy to move across most surfaces. After a year of moving this monster around I went back to looking at easels and have made what I hope to be my final purchase for a while.

I believe I first saw the tripod set up on a Facebook group dedicated to wedding painters and I was intrigued which led to a deep dive and many blogs, Youtube, and Tiktoks later I was convinced I need one. It is very pricey and I hesitated for months before making the purchase. My hope was to find a good used one on Ebay but my problem was I did not want the poache box which is what is more commonly sold. I needed only the canvas holder and a tripod. The Sienna tripod is over $300 alone! So once again lots of research went into this purchase. I eventually went with a nice camera tripod for a little less money Vanguard VEO3+263AB Aluminum Tripod with Ball Head with Multi-Angle Center Column for Overhead Shots it cost about $189 but that's because I went with an older model and it is an excellent tripod. I also ordered a 2nd cheaper tripod with the intentions of sending back the one I didn't like. It was about $79 and I do like that I can fold the legs up so that the overall carrying and loading of this tripod is easier but it is definitely not as nice as the vanguard. VICTIV 80" Camera Tripod, Aluminum Heavy Duty Tripod Stand with 360° Ball Head, Camera Tripods & Monopods with Carry Bag, Professional DSLR Tripod for Canon Nikon Binoculars Spotting Scope Telescope I use this tripod to set up my camera for filming and at home I use it in the studio for my projector.  
I opted for the Sienna Plein Air Palette Box (CT-PS-100) ($135) along with the canvas holder ($107)... because I went with a different brand tripod I had to order a different release plate so I could make the attachment from the canvas holder to the tripod. Vanguard QS-60 V2 Quick Shoe Release Plate for Alta Pro 2/2+ and Arca Compatible Tripod Heads

So the good... I can now load up almost everything I need in my husband's Honda Accord if I needed to go to a venue and couldn't take my Expedition. It's a ton easier to load and unload and I take up a little less space. My set up still looks nice and professional and I'm better equipped for outdoor venues with uneven ground. 

The bad.. it was very expensive. and the canvas holder swivels on the tripod but I do think that is something I can fix if I tried. It will only hold up to 30" and I couldn't use it with a frame which is something I'm seeing a lot right now. I probably didn't need the Palette box and it fits weirldly on my tripod but I like the way it looks lol. 

I regret nothing lol I love my new tripod easel! I also love that I have the beautiful single staff to use when I want to show off at wedding expos or big events. I added a couple more things like the rock holder thing to weigh down the tripod and a folding chair that is really too short for my uses. I now have a nice leather bag to carry it all in and a new chair from my sister in law for Christmas. I plan on breaking down my whole set up in a future blog post and will post more about those later.

It's been a while!  I haven't made a post since Nov of 2023 and wow a lot has changed!  For starters I changed schools and am now teaching high school at a small charter school.  I went to grad school and now have a Masters in Art from Kennesaw State University.  This May I completed the GaTAPP program so I will finally have my teacher's certificate.  I started painting live events which has been one of my favorite new things to do.  In 2022 we welcomed our second son to this crazy life and as of today I have a 7 year old who is finishing up 1st grade and 15 month old who is still refusing to walk.  David and I finally married in January of 2022 after 11 years of being together. 
This year has so far been a great one for my career in art.  In early January I completed a wildlife mural in Pelham, Georgia.  I was notified last month that I will be nationally published later this fall for my painting Georgia Citrus.  That same day I received my acceptance email for a show that has been for years one of my biggest career goal.  Because I have less time to paint I rarely do commissions anymore but have been focusing on originals and smaller mixed media works.  I've started to dabble back in sculptural ceramic pieces and have dived into mixed media art.  Summer starts in one week for us and I hope to spend the next two months creating art and making memories.

I painted these two Georgia Pecan door hangers a month apart.  The one on the right was a lucky whim.. I wasn't sure how they would be received as door hanger art but I knew it was something I had not seen and that was my goal.  Painting door hangers is a fun way to decompress.  This time of the year I'm usually stressed out up to my ears in commissions.  Due to Covid and the changes in our regular school holiday I was hesitant to take on commissions I would struggle to find time to finish.  This way I can paint when I can and if I don't finish anything else between here and Christmas it's no big deal.  Also why I haven't tried to presale the door hangers.  As you will see if you read on life has a way of surprising you.

It all started with all the positive affirmation I received after I posted the first door hanger.  A day or two later I made up my mind and ordered 5 more blanks with the goal of painting them before Christmas.  While waiting on my shipment I rode the golf cart to the nearest pecan field and took lots of pictures.  When I got back I edited 50 images down to about 5 and picked the above to render in photoshop.  
When the blanks came in I spent about two days prepping them and I projected the chosen image onto the primed surface of the Georgia shape.  I draw in most of the big shapes and dominant lines from the photo.  Pencil marks stay visible on the paneling so I draw in a few more dark lines than I normally do on canvas.

On the Wednesday that I had big plans to paint the day away I went to pick up my 4 year old from the neighbors.  He was complaining about his right arm and wouldn't lift it.  After a trip to the ER with an x-ray we learned he had broken his collar bone jumping off the bed.  I went and got him a happy meal, brought him home and babied him the rest of the afternoon.  I only managed a few minutes to paint after Dad made it home and took over.

I blocked in the back ground with the first coat of color.  I new the painting would get much darker so I kept it vibrant and light.  The brush strokes are very visible in the beginning which is something I struggled with the first few times I painted on panel.  Since then I've learned not to blend or try to smooth too much.

Then there was a short pause from painting.  We had an orthopedic appointment and the first day home after the booboo we spent on the couch.  Not a lot of alone time to paint that week.

When I finally found the time to start back painting I went straight to the smooth shell of the pecan.  The husks have lots of texture and intricate details so I saved it for last.  I take pictures at the end of every session.  I like to look back at my progress.  On the pecans I'm using a lot of yellow oxide, burnt umber, raw umber, dark titanium white in Master's touch Acrylic paint.  The also have a nice opaque florescent light orange which adore and use in everything!  It adds the best glow to highlights and brightens up all the colors.
The husk is a mixture of dioxazine purple for the darkest areas and lake blue or yellow oxide where I'll come back and add highlights.  I mix the smallest amounts of black into my purple for the very dark but I hold off on real dark blacks till the end.  I reference the photograph heavily during this part and only use the pencil marks as basic guidelines.

Like I said above each picture is from the end of a session.  Breaks in painting usually mean things like, its bed time, I had to cook supper, do something for Stetson, go somewhere, etc.  So at this point, we are 5 days in the painting of this door hanger.. six different short sessions.  That's pretty good considering we had an ER visit, a doctors appointment, and bartended a wedding with 200 guests.  The BD (baby daddy) is the reason why I get to paint.  He has always stepped in and picked up my slack while I get to do what I love the most.

I continue to darken my darks and lighten my lights.  I've added another wash to the background to make it more uniformed.  I love the dark rich colors of the husks and how they contrast with the lighter smoother pecan shells.  I love using blues in my highlights for the pops of colors and how the warm browns melts into the deep purple-black.  When I feel pretty satisfy I airbrush the black vignette around the edges and throw in a little bit of soft shadows.  The vignette looks more finished and helps push the image off whatever wall or door it may be hung on.

I seriously need to figure out a better way to take pictures.  My easel Ott light washes out the tops of my pieces plus you can see all my messiness in the background.  I cleared off a spot on the bed to take this picture but the pattern from the comforter is distracting.  I don't put the wire on until it's finished so I can't hang it at this point on the wall.

All that is left is using the black paint marker (uniPOSCA) to out line and make all the fun dots and marks on the shells.  I outlined each husk for definition and to add a graphic quality to the final piece.  I like how flat black these markers dry and they seem to go a long way.  I used a light wash to pick back out some textures of the shell and then it was done.

I took it outside for the final picture, listed it on my webpage and it sold within the hour.  The new owner Mr. John E Williams is a fellow Highschool alumni and also from the Pecan capital, Baconton, GA.  He now lives in New York and I am so happy he has this little piece of home.
If nothing else comes up this week (knocking on wood) the next one will be more impressionistic in style, which is outside my comfort zone.

Move aside cotton fields, peanut bales and pecan trees there's a new agricultural muse in town!  A short ride out side of Thomasville on a beautiful two lane country road in Ochlocknee Georgia sits a wonderful Citrus farm.  I met owner Lindy Savelle several years ago when I joined a local running group and was introduced to the world of Citrus farming in Georgia.  She spoke then of plans to open her farm to the public and I've excitedly watched her journey through social media.  We showed up an hour too early (I should have checked the times) and our gracious hosts still allowed us to roam the groves. I managed to grab some awesome shots of what I hope to be many beautiful canvases in the near future while my son played hide and seek and drove all the tractors in the yard.

I know I spent way to long going through each picture.  I'm just in love with the dark greens contrasted with the yellows and oranges.  The textures of the peel, the glossy leaves... I love how they grow out like a radial halo around the bunches of citrus.  And the pops of colors in the background!  I want it all!  Agriculture is the best subject matter; it never disappoints.  

It's been awhile but I've drawn or painted my fair share of tractors and automobiles.  I'm inspired and if Christmas wasn't around the corner I would be picking a canvas right now.  I adore rust and all the character of a well loved farm machinery.  JoNina Farm has it all!  I wish I would have taken the time to grab a shot of the house on our way out.  It's what dreams are made of.

There's just so many "good ones" to share!  I get all giddy looking back at these.  I'm so excited to have yet another subject matter and to explore the possibilities with the images I grabbed today.  Thanks Lindy and Mr. Perry for opening such a great experience to us Southern Georgians! 

I've said it before but south Georgia heat and humidity is a beast, sometime even way into the winter.  I treat all my outside projects like they will be used in the middle of July.  After much experimentation I have come up with a method that's effective and fairly fast.  Please note I do these in batches.  This particular session I had 5 Georgia shapes, 2 mason jars and 2 back of trucks, all of which were at least 24" at their longest length.

Step 1.  Clean the boards.  I only use a dry paper towel to dust each piece especially edges and crannies.  If I was outside I would use compressed air but I'm working out of a spare room in the back.  Dry clean I would not spray or use any damp method MDF will quickly absorb any liquids.

Step 2.  Roll on primer.  I'm using Kilz All Purpose here but any latex primer will work.  I bought both the primer and the mini rollers on the same aisle at Walmart.  Here in the sticks where I live our Walmart is circumcised compared to all the wonderful Super Walmart's out there so if we have it its safe to say all Walmart have them.

So one coat and then I prop them up around the room.  I only coat primer on the side I plan on painting.  By the time I get to the end the first one is dried so I'll go around and do a 2nd coat of primer.  By the 2nd coat the surface should be a uniformed bright white.  In this picture here you can still see a warm beigey color from the MDF showing through.  I also roll the edges.  This might be over kill but the edges are going to be the most vulnerable to moisture and dings so as you will see they are coated the most.

The front is kinda standard.  That's one of the more popular ways of prepping a wooden door hanger.  The back is were I differ.  I use the Tea towels to cover up the board I'm painting on.  Its a scrap piece of MDF I had bought for a different project and as you can see it is well used.  I don't want wet primer sticking to and peeling off the finish of the fronts.  This was a lesson I learned from my own personal rushing errors.  Also I waited a full day to do the back so the front was completely dried.  That's not common I usually do both in one day but I was short on time.  This is the roller kit I buy from Walmart for about $8.  Now I have two one for primer and one for the Black coat.

Step 3.  I use the rollers like with the primer.  I like the foam ones that come in the kit but either will work.  Make sure you get a even coat on the nap and then go to town.

I like two coats on the back so everything is a nice solid matte black and I also paint the edges here.  As you can see in the pictures the roller does a great job on straight away and curves but I have to use a brush in the corners.  There will be a little of the black around the edges on the front side.  You can wipe these away while you paint but most of the time I leave them.  I like the black edge and I usually airbrush a black vignette on most of my work anyways so they disappear by the time I finish the door hanger.

I project some of the images I use onto the actual hanger.  I can sit there and free hand draw in a realistic manner but ain't nobody got time for that.  I do freehand most of the others but things like the pecans I save time by projecting the image.  I'm on my 2nd projector;  the first I bought 10 years ago on eBay for about $40 and my newer one for about $60 on amazon.  They are essential to my painting process!  It saves me sooooo much time and they have so many uses.  I even carried my new one to school with me for lessons when I didn't have a school projector.
Also I hate calling this a "secret"  I tell anyone who ask about using the projector but I know some people will snub their nose at "tracing".  Like I tell my students there is absolutely nothing wrong with tracing!  Its a means to an end and you still have to do all the harder work of painting the image.  If nothing else makes sense I hope you take away that there is no wrong way of creating art!  

My process for originals starts with a truck and usually a dirt road.  I grew up in very rural South Georgia so most of my memories consist of wild flowers, muddy ponds, fishing, picking blackberries and red clay roads.  I find that I'm inspired by these memories and the focus of my photography is close ups of south Georgia life.

So when we ride I bring my camera.  We live in town now; I'm a country girl turned city girl.  But this city has a population of about 5,000 and there's a pecan field a short walk away.  In our free time we love to fish.  Instead of picking berries now I'm trying to set up the perfect shot.

Pecans are significant subject in my art.  I spent most of my childhood picking pecans, shelling pecans or running through pecan fields.

I worked briefly in my early 20s for a professional photographer.  There I learned about levels and curves and I've always edited my own photos.  My style has definitely evolved since I started painting from my own reference photos.

I like to keep several edits of the same image.  I paint what I see.  I'm more confident now with colors but I still rely heavily on the reference pictures.  I send my reference photos to the local Walgreen and order 8x10 same day prints.  Sometimes I am able to start right then on a painting.  More often I will save them for a later date.  Currently I have 4 portfolios filled with pictures from the past 5 years.  100s of ideas waiting for the canvas.  When I'm lacking motivation I flip through these images.  It fills with me inspiration and the urge to create. 

I bought my camera, a Nikon D7000, off of Facebook market place a few years back.  It came with one 18-140mm lens.  Since then I've added a Yongnuo 35mm Prime lens.  It's nothing fancy but still one of my most prized possession.  I use auto more often than not but my focus is creating great reference photos and I don't often share my pictures.  The ones used in this post are my most recent edited pieces.  Its such a huge part of my process and our lives.  I carry this camera on every vacation and most golf cart rides.  Some weekends are planned around Momma taking pictures if I'm looking for a particular subject.  We hunt blackberry spots and will check every few days to see if they are ready.  When I show locally I enjoy sharing the story behind each painting.  I've had several people recognize livestock, farms and even trees.

Common newbie questions:
"what do I do now", "do I seal it?", "how?", "how do I hang it" etc etc etc... I'll try to break down my process and hopefully answer these plus a few extra tips.
FYI my knowledge is from a combination of experience in painting on a range of material and working in custom framing while in college.

Here's my Snazzy Gingerbread waiting to go hang out on someone's door.  I started this process by checking to see if I needed to fix anything.  I like to wait a day or two from finishing the actual painting and then come back with fresh eyes.  Which is when I noticed his eyes needed to be touched up.  I had used a marker to out line and it didn't blend in well with the paint so I used my darkest black and repainted the eyes and mouth.  
Tip #1 Not all paint colors are created equal....
They vary due to brand, type, name etc... Mars Black and Ivory black are the two most common names I've seen but recently I've found a permanent Black in Master's touch acrylic line (Hobby Lobby's house brand) that is way dark.  New favorite.

I also touched up the edges were the primer was showing.  I'll show later in another blog post how I start the door hangers.  They come to me as plain MDF cutouts.  I coat the backs and edges first with a special black paint and then roll on a primer on the fronts.  My goal is to seal the MDF as well as possible since its so vulnerable to moisture.  I only touch up the edges were the front is dark so I did not go around the hat.  Why not the whole thing?  Because I'm prone to booboos and the red and white hat is not as forgiving as the rest of the gingerbread man. 

I'm always concerned about the archival quality of my work... Door hangers are for the outside.. warranted not in direct contact with rain or water but where I'm from humidity is the real beast.  I've seen lots of How to's saying to just spray them with a clear sealer.... I've yet to find a spray product to rival brushing on a sealer.  I might will spray a layer if I'm concerned with a marker bleeding but I will forever brush.

I start with Mod Podge.  It's user friendly and I've found that Polycrylic will cause markers and paint to smear.  I use a regular brush and not the foam, they leave behind debris which is oh so annoying.  The key is to not over work the brush strokes and to move it around quickly.  Super thin layers will cause dragging so I will coat my paint brush like I would with a background color.  That's not to say glob it on it shouldn't be so thick that its opaque white... more like the last picture.. streaky.

​He Just looks so happy!  You can see there's now a shine on his hat and the white streaks are gone.  Modpodge if done right will dry fairly quick and leave the surface uniform and smooth.

Ignore the mess in the background I'm not in a Pinterest worthy studio its just a spare bedroom.  The carpet is old but that's fine for me to paint over and it has lots of built ins.  Everything is wood... everything... also there's carpet in the attached bath which is eww.

It's the final layer over the now dried Modpodge.  This may be a little over kill to some but better safe than sorry.  I actually used a sponge brush to apply this layer.  I only brushed on a thin layer and now that I have the Modpodge foundation it just glided over the surface and didn't snag in the actual art work.  I had absolutely no bleeds, smudges, or runs which is fairly unusual for me.

The backs are already coated with this amazing stuff I found for a totally different project.  I'll try to make that the next blog post.  I eye ball the wire make sure I leave an inch or so for the twists.  I keep them fairly short I don't like a lot of sag so I just assume others wouldn't either.  This wire is probably 20 or 22 gauge.. I'm not sure its been hanging around in my craft supplies for a while.  
Tip #2 the smaller the gauge the thicker the wire.  I also have some 16 gauge wire floating around and its fine for this type of craft I just like thinner stuff.

I like to make my twists tight and I keep them close to the holes.  I want them to go up about and inch and go around the wire several times.  Look closely at the first picture.  Using my fingers I can not bend in the end and it sticks out.  This would probably do no damage but it was ingrained in me to use the needle nose to crimp it in.  Its less likely to scrap now or unravel over time.

I was also introduced to these nifty things when I did custom framing.  They are little rubber bumpers that stick to the back.  They help protect the hanger and whatever its hanging on.  Considering doors are opened and closed, or that wind and other elements might cause movement these bumpers are a nice touch.  I found a variety set on amazon and I place them near the wire so it creates space between the wire and the door.  I also place at the bottom in hopes that it will be a buffer.

All that's left is my personalized stickers.  I made these on the Avery website.  I need a real logo but for now I'm just using my name and all the ways to contact me online.  They also just help to look legit which is the goal.

And here he is! Finished!  So I have the same tongue and groove wood paneling in the original parts of our home that was built in the 20s.  I painted the hallway to cut down on some of the many grains of wood.  I've been taking pictures there even though the lighting is yellowed.  I actually don't have a front facing door so when I do outside pictures I have them on my front porch.  I found vinyl hangers on amazon which are amazing so I didn't have to put an actual hole in the exterior wall.

And if you've made it this far here's another secret.. I was inspired by chip and dale dancers when painting this fun loving guy!  Every time I look at him I sing in my head "somebody come get'er he's dancing like a stripper".

The first time I did a stencil on a door hanger it was awful.  

It was a gorgeous mason jar hanger.  It WAS painted and airbrushed to perfection.  I was in love.  I had left over cheap vinyl and used my cameo to cut the stencil.  When I started to peel the vinyl off not only did I have bleeds... it lifted in little spots allllll over.

So I tried to order some Oracal Stencil Vinyl but there was several different types.  I wanted a low tack stencil I could use on door hangers but since I airbrush I wanted it to be flexible enough I could use it on non flat surfaces.  Sometime Stencil material is stiff or plastic like which would not have as many uses for me personally.

​I ended up with an off brand Masking Film from amazon that has been fairly reliable.  It was a blind buy but I was lucky this time.

I made up a design using the Silhouette Studio and cut with my older Cameo 2.  Easy so far.

Next I cut out some contact paper the size of my stencil.   

Once the contact paper is ready I used the comforter on the bed to remove some of the tackiness.  My work space is in my guest bed room sooo... you know just use what you have on hand.  I do it half and half to prevent it from sticking to itself and creating a hot mess.

This stuff seems kind of common sense but I assure you I make a ton of mistakes because I rush things.
Onward...
I use a bondo spreader (available in the car paint section) to smooth out bubbles and to make sure the contact paper has a grip on the stencil.. There's a weird balance of too much sticky and not enough.  When something doesn't lift try to use your fingers to peel it off the white backing and attach it to the contact paper before you fully remove the stencil. 

I center up the Stencil and using the bondo spreader I apply pressure evenly to help it adhere to the surface.  Especially the small pieces in the cutouts.. they tend to be problematic but like before just take a little time to make sure they are on the door hanger before fully removing the contact paper.

I cut the contact paper into strips to mask off more of the snowflakes because over spray is a pain and I hate to waste.  If I was doing other stencils I would use it several more times but tonight my goal was to do this blog and not major production.
I use a low tack painters tape to mask off a little bit more.  It is also used multiple times I stick it to the bookcase beside me until I need it again.
The easel is a more ideal set up then the floor and I prefer to work vertical. I love my Ott light the lighting in this room is in desperate need of updating.

I have been favoring my Iwata Eclipse HP-CS lately for this smaller work.  I've been airbrushing since I was 21 though I'm no expert its usually hit or miss for me.  I also do a lot of things I'm sure other artist would be appalled by.. like mixing my paint in the cup.  Here's a few tips from my trails and errors.
1.  Try not to use "craft paints" they tend to dry faster and gum up the gun which leads to extra cleaning and lots of tears.
2. lay the paint to the side of the cup instead of the bottom

I add a little water and use a small paint brush to stir.  You just want it a little thin not runny.. I was too busy trying to take a good picture so this first batch was too watery.. but I just kinda ran with it.

Which caused some beading up and not so good stuff... this is the beginning of more bad decisions to redeem myself from the last bad idea...  I decided to add more color to thicken it up some.

then I was like white.. that should help...
so I dumped out the above mixture and added the white...
I dump out the paint on a plate because I hate the waste and this time it worked... I use it later down the line.
I also added a little more water here.  White is inherently thick and will sputter in your gun if not thinned properly.

Tip # 3... blow out the last color into a paper towel before you go back to your painting.  There's a lot of paint still in the brush if you don't wash between colors... like me.

At this point I was just done and I went ahead and peeled the stencil off.  With airbrushing there's very little wait time.  The purple ended up being a good choice so right here I'm feeling good again.

there was a tiny bit of bleed from that first wet coat of paint so I decided to add some back ground flair... big mistake.. I hated it...

To save it I thought maybe to go all the way around the door hanger and then to add dots for some visual interest with my new Uni POSCA marker.  Notice in the marker picture I have managed to get pretty dirty..
​Tip # 4 Wash your hand before touching your door hanger.

Overall I thought this piece turned out ok and was pretty pleased with the results.  Also this were the paint I saved earlier came in handy.  I used it to make dots in the purple color since I managed to transfer paint from my hand to the door hanger.

soooooo currently I'm listening to Stetson telling me how I should paint a marvel theme door hanger while I wait on the glue to dry... lol I don't know why I keep trying with Glitter.  Hopefully my How to's will get better.  Thanks if you made it all the way to the end!
